Hunter Potter’s Story
What did you make during residency?
Throughout my time at PLOP I made a handful of large scale acrylic paintings on canvas. I intentionally worked on unstretched canvas for the ease of transporting the work, which allowed me to produce as many paintings as desired without having to stress the details of how I would ever get it home. I simply rolled all of the work up in a tube and used a skiing bag to get the paintings through the airport process. Easy!
What motivated you to apply?
I wanted to experience London, as so many artists I admire are based there, and felt that a residency such as PLOP would be the best way to do so. PLOP is 100% artist run and acts as a direct portal to the London art world.
What are your favourite memories of London whilst taking part in PLOP?
I had so much freaking fun bopping around London following Oli and Aindrea's lead. We saw so many amazing shows, ate great food, drank to our hearts content, and still made it to the studio every single day to be productive. The studio calendar where anyone could jot down suggestions for openings, restaurants, etc was like the holy grail for my month in London.
What connections did you make?
I have stayed in contact with all of my residency mates, especially Cathrin Hoffman, and cherish the connections we all made. As far as career connections, I met countless curators, gallerists, and collectors throughout the month, many of whom I am still in regular touch with today. Public Gallery, whose directors I met while at PLOP, wound up offering me a solo show a short time after. This would have never happened if not for PLOP. Richard Heller Gallery in LA discovered my work through the PLOP platform.
What have you been up to?
Painting, painting and more painting! I just opened a solo show at Richard Heller Gallery in LA and have several more shows scheduled throughout the rest of 2021.
